Compare the New 2019 Subaru Forester to the Competition Here at Colonial Subaru

You're looking for a compact SUV that stands apart from the rest. Your choices here in the Kingston area are many. For two decades and counting, the Subaru Forester has been the crossover more orienteers have come to prefer, built to durable, accommodating, and tech-savvy spec in the tradition of the Subaru Impreza and back and better than ever for model-year 2019. But its rivals drive a hard bargain, too. One, the Honda CR-V, is just as long-lived, built on its automaker's dependable Civic platform. Another, the Toyota RAV4, has been around a couple of years longer, incorporating tried-and-true elements from both its brand's Carina sedan and the older, highly regarded, and now-modernized Corolla four-door. However, when it comes to checking all the boxes for both adventure and the everyday, only ours pulls ahead, coming ruggedly capable for southern New York terrain and weather. Check out how it fares against the others here at Colonial Subaru.

2019 Subaru Forester vs 2018 Honda CR-V

  • Both Forester and CR-V may get comparable fuel economy for traveling cities like Albany, up to 26 mpg according to the EPA, but it's ours that goes the extra mile on the highway to spots like Poughkeepsie, 33 mpg to the latter's 32.
  • Forester gets better fuel capacity, 16.6 gallons to its Honda rival's 14.0. That means fewer trips to the pump around Woodstock.
  • Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, our automaker's permanent AWD system, comes standard, and together with a longer wheelbase than CR-V. 105.1 inches, Forester promises a firmer grip, proactivity with traction, and even fewer moving parts than other electronic systems, resulting in lower maintenance -- in all, a more confident drive across diverse, weather-beaten landscapes. Honda's SUV offers a Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System, but it's slip-then-grip, electronic, and only an option.
  • With a sharper turning circle between curbs, 35.4 feet compared to CR-V at 37.4, Forester is more maneuverable where space is at a premium. That's great for everything from city streets to cramped parking lots.
  • Where roominess is concerned, Forester has CR-V beat. It offers a more capacious cabin, 111.9 cubic feet to the latter's 105.9, and that comprehends more front head, leg, and shoulder room as well as better rear head and shoulder room, plus an edge in cargo space, up to 76.1 cubic feet to Honda's 75.8.

2019 Subaru Forester vs 2018 Toyota RAV4

  • Thanks to its base 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine, the Forester gets more horsepower than the RAV4, 182 to 176. It also has better torque, 176 pound-feet to 172. The result? A more energetic driving feel, and superior turning and pulling power.
  • That's especially true given that Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the Subaru proprietary, always-on AWD system, comes standard. RAV4 offers Dynamic Torque-Control AWD, but it's optional, even in the Adventure trim.
  • Forester gets both better city and better highway fuel economy than RAV4. Count on up to 26 mpg in cities like Newburgh and 33 mpg across the highway to Catskill. Toyota's SUV only gets up to 23 city mpg and 30 highway mpg.
  • The Forester interior is more spacious, too, weighing in at a whopping 111.9 cubic feet compared to the RAV4 cabin, measuring 101.9. That's more room for your head, legs, and shoulders up front, and better head, leg, and shoulder room in the back. Expect a bit more room for cargo, too - up to 76.1 cubic feet compared to Toyota's 73.4.
